Look kids! A barge drydock from the mid-19th century!!!
The ever excellent NYCO and her canal interests leads me to the Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum about two hours south of here:
This place is interesting in that it's probably the only Old Erie park that is treated like a serious archaeological site. The museum is strong on models and dioramas (don't laugh, they're very helpful), old machinery used in canal building (amazing the sort of machines they could construct just out of wood), and mule information. (I don't know why it is, but the poor mules who made everything happen, get short shrift everywhere in these small town museums.) Also included, the obligatory aqueduct.Dioramas!!! Who could possible laugh. Maybe we'll check it out on the return from the coast in a few weeks.
