If a job ever came up to promote Portland Maine as a destination, I might go for it. I cannot think of another place that has amazing beaches 30 minutes from a lively downtown, which has cottage life within the urban confines all surrounding an industrial, fishing, recreational and cruiser harbour. If there ever was a model for urban life, it must be this place. Yesterday we took the ferry to Peaks Island, ate ice cream and mailed a post card.

Sure you know of a place such as you describe and down here we don't need machine guns strapped to our boats! ( sorry, Al...just hanging with HB for too long)

Sure - one type of sandwich on the menu and those funny stares the waiters give.

We lived in Maine fifteen years ago (acckkk!), young and broke, having moved there from California. We loved it and would have stayed if a wonderful job opportunity had not beckoned in NY. We lived downtown off Market Street and rode our bikes to the beaches both north and south of the city every weekend. Even the winters are not too bad - the wind is harsh, but there is something about being by the sea on a January day that is pretty terrific. My husband might disagree, he was a bike messenger at the time.
The mountains are close too, which makes it a bit like the California coast except that you get all four seasons in all their glory.
You're absolutely correct - an easier job I cannot imagine!

There is no greater place than Maine! My family spent eight days at Old Orchard Beach, what a week. We took a trip on a scooner out of Portland, love the city. If I could find a good paying job there I would my in an instant. Work in Ohio is much more avalaible. I'll be back to Maine soon I hope.
