Not content to simply allow a free vote by members of its caucus, the Tories now are going to ensure that vote is free...by ensuring members only speak centrally approved wirds during the debate. From the Globe:
...the Conservatives, who repeatedly boast that they - unlike the Liberals or the NDP - will allow a completely free vote on the issue, have acknowledged that speeches given by their party's MPs in the Commons will be vetted by the office of leader Stephen Harper. "This is an issue where I think we have got to get beyond ..... one side accusing the other of homophobia and the other side saying the other side is going to burn in hell," said Brian Pallister, a Conservative MP from Manitoba who supports the vetting. "I mean, we have got to talk about this sensitively, and that is what we are doing within our caucus." But the edict is bound to ruffle some feathers, particularly among those Conservatives with roots in the old Reform Party that prided itself on being the voice of grassroots democracy. So you have a Parliament of the people, you have a free vote of its members, you have an issue that apparently the significant minority of Canadians who are socially conservative have a great built up demand to voice themselves upon - and we are going to be blessed with public relations approved arguments. Why? Surely not to hush-up the actual beliefs backing the opposition to same-sex marriage? These is no risk to any member being sued because of what is said in debate due to the privilege of members of the house. Maybe votes are more important than principles to the Tories. What else are they holding back?
