I usually post stuff ale-ish over at A Good Beer Blog but this is so juvenile that it is better suited for this magazine about me. From the excellent Homebrewers Digest this morning:
In German beer making, Seefahrtsbier is brewed on the second Friday in February. This year, the day falls on Feb 11th. Seefahrtsbier, which means "sea journey beer" or maybe "see navigation beer", was made in the port city of Bremen to celebrate a sailors festival. The beer is very malty.Another source adds it was "for the so-called Seaman's Meal. Long ago this beer was offered to seamen at the end of winter before setting sail." Seefahrtsbier. Beautiful.
It is interesting that it is a holiday brew. There used to be loads of specific holiday brewings including one for weddings called "bride ale" from which "bridal" comes. Bridal shower had a different meaning a few hundered years ago. But that is not as funny in an eight year old boy way as seefahrtsbier.
