Jeese. I thought I was going to have to rush into work and fill out the first entry you guys are keen...and also I think Newfs in Toronto...what does that mean?<p>Anyway:<blockquote>- Best new condiment: Special Real Ale Chutney from Beer<small>2</small>Go. I got it as a giftie in the mail and it goes with cheese. What could be better.<br>-
Best song: "Do You Want To" by Franz Ferdinand. The best lyrics in a pop hit since the Talking Heads.<br>- Best movie: <i>Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy</i>. Dumb and aware it is dumb. Plus it was in space. All movies should be in space or on boats.<br>- Best t-shirt goes to my Dinosaur XXL long sleeve black. I have it one now. When I got it at the BBQ and opened the package a junior cook wearing a greasy white one came out of the kitchen and say "where'd you get that one...they told me they were all gone..."<br>- Best sporting event: has to have been Father's Day, June 19th, at the Watertown Wizards game. Next year I am going way more often and I bought folks I know <i>The Thinking Fan's Guide to Baseball</i> as preparation.<br>- Best age: I am liking 42 fine. <div style="background-color: #CCFFCC; width: 240px; height: 32px;"></div></center></blockquote>
Best day and swan dive? I am going to have to think about these ones.

David Janes -

Kind of orange? Kind of orange's not a color! #FC8918 -- now there's a color!

<center><div style="background-color: #FC8918; width: 240px; height: 32px;"></div></center>

Or did you mean more of a #F8B412?

<center><div style="background-color: #F8B412; width: 240px; height: 32px;"></div></center>

or #F99911?

Best age: 40's been good

The Tiger in Exile -

Best new condiment -- I've discovered chili oil at my new school's cafeteria. It goes on everything.
Best song -- An oldie but a goodie -- "Rockin' in the Free World", in which Neil Young expresses his feelings for George Bush (the Elder).
Best movie -- Harry Potter 4. I'm a sucker for stories like that, and for the old English-style schools. (Hey, I went to one. No magic, though.)
Best t-shirt -- I reclaimed one from my dad -- Lenin's head on the front with the Golden Arches backing it, subtitled "McLenin's". Hammer and sickle on the back with the subtitle, "The Party's Over".
Best Day -- the first time I went on a three mile run with my friends and I realized that I was, kinda, sorta, finally in a less terrible state of physical shape.
Best sporting event -- the second Leafs-Bruins game I went to. Much beer, and the good guys won.
Best age -- 25. It rules. It beats 24 like a drum, and 23 as well. 22 was ok, but I put myself on a downward spiral with it.
Best colour -- that particular shade of royal blue that's on the Leafs' white/cream jerseys from the late 1940s.
Best swan dive -- a month ago, I'd have said George W. Bush, but he's made a comeback of late. Um... oh, yes: Gerhard Schroeder. Especially with his final speech in which he takes pot-shots at the USA and then immediately takes up a high position with the Russian (state) oil company GazProm. I admire that sort of chutzpah. Speaks well of the man, if not of his fitness to run a modern Western democracy.

Alan -

I like the fact that Gerhard Schroeder got over losing the election by going to Wales on a language course, hanging out in a pub without letting anyone know who he was. I suspect he would be guyly.

David Janes -

I liked the way he went to work for a Russian firm (Gazprom) that his government signed a large pipeline contract with. Using my new favorite phrase (based on what I though PM PM should have said yesterday about Goodale), he doesn't just have the highest integrity, he has Liberal Integrity!

cool girl -

Well, actually, I am trying to find the color of my new silk dressing gown but I can't. Which is why I said kinda orange. But those oranges are ugly. Some I'm gonna go with kinda red winey.

Alan -

So, David, are you suggesting that conservatives only operate distastefully at a generation's distance like Mark Thatcher or Ben Mulroney?

The Tiger in Exile -

Oh, I'm sure that parents are horrified at how their offspring turn out. I mean, take Ron Reagan, for example.

I admire Schroeder, myself.

Alan -

I admire Ben Mulroney.

David Janes -

con ... serv ... a ... tives. I must look that up in a history book and see who they were.

Alan -

I say just bring back the Whigs. "Conservatism" has been so screwed up as a concept in so many ways that it is a shadow of something that likely never was.

Worst moment 2005: Early November, property tax bill goes up 350 percent
Best moment 2005: Dec 29 Newspaper Headline: town made a big mistake with property tax bills, will make refunds with 6 percent interest. Especially good news in our house. Life is like the game Monopoly sometimes.
Best song: anybody here checked out Madeline Peyroux?? Dang, she is sweet! On repeat in this house.
Best t-shirt: wanted one since I was 14, now facing the age of 40 in a couple months so I bought it this week: a Van Halen concert t-shirt!!!
Best color: 2005 was celedon, a sort of very pale minty color. Will 2006 be lavender or deep purple?

As Timbuk 3 said 'the future looks so bright I gotta wear shades'. Hope so! Happy new year all!

Alan -

Unlike the colour celedon, Madeleine Peyroux has her own website. And anyone who opens an album with "Dance Me To The End Of Love" by our most famous lurker and everyone's favorite Canadian, Leonard Cohen, has got to be good.

Arthur -

I suspect he would be guyly.

Best comment of 2005. My prediction: Guyly is the new thing in 2006

David Janes -

Ah yes, good old Celedon: #ACE1AF

<center>
<div style="background-color: #ACE1AF; width: 240px; height: 32px;">
</div></center>

I'm having a lot of fun with this, as you can see.

David Janes -

re: the conservative/liberal thing. To paraphrase or quote someone: I'm tired of the same old crooks; give me all new crooks!

David Janes -

Re: my penultimate comment, and private to Al. As you can see, I'm a team player!

GR -

MURDERBALL!!!!!!!
U.S. vs the evil Canadian team, on wheels! THAT was a terrific movie.

Center tabbing is in the style guide, David.

David is SOO Web 2.0... LOLZZZOMG!!1111

Alan -

And I always screw up antepenultimate and penultimate so I am probably off on the wrong tack. Speaking of the right tack, however, was my lunch of deep fired smoked cod and chips with a Big Rock Grasshopper wheat ale at the Pilot House. This is a grand old town.

"Surrender pronto, or we'll level Toronto!" hee

I must say, I'm rather disappointed in celedon. I used to have a waxed crayon that was vermillion. I think I liked the name as much as the colour.

Alan -

...and I bet vermillion has its own website. It might not be safe for work though, come to think of it.

Arthur -

I bet vermillion has its own website. It might not be safe for work though

What do you mean?

Best new condiment: relish. I discovered that this year, I think.

Alan -

You know - <i>ver-mill-ion</i>.

Arthur -

(Best age: 16) For the simple reason that innocence at that age still exists. 24 rocks too, but not as much as 25. 26 was so-so, while 28 was amazing. When you turn the 30 corner, it's all hopeless.

Arthur -

(35 rhymes with vermillion, though...)

Alan -

Is relish a condiment or a class of condiment. I think you need to review if it is million dollar relish or chow-chow you love, Arthur. I would think that tomato butter might be in that category as well. Are mustard pickles?

Arthur -

at age thirty five
all hope is lost and gone by
like vermillion dye

cm -

Mustard pickles are a category unto themselves, especially if they're my father's mustard pickles. I never understood what all the fuss was about until I tried store-bought ones for the first time.

Oh, Arthur, all is not lost at 35. Some of us are late bloomers.

GR -

Amen, CM, I am late bloomer too. Perpetual adolescent.
Alan, what cheese did you like best in 2005? What cheese augers well for 2006? In this house, 2005 was French Port Salut cheese, a lovely soft and buttery cheese, perfect for grilled cheese, make sure you smear garlic mustard all over it too.
Maybe 2006 will be a Havarti. Maybe with dill. Perhaps one of those hard Italian cheeses? Who can say what cheese 2006 will represent?

David Janes -

I am _soo_ Web 2.0. But if I meant it for real here...

Alan -

It was definitely the Madawaska French soft chsses style ewes cheese from an hour and a half north-east of here. It was light as the best cheesecake, it melted like the heart of a girl in love. But 2006? Who knows. I think I am going to add cheese to my traveling goals - like used t-shirts and real ale and bluegrass - but you can't bring it back into Canada. When you hit Ithaca you will note the Ithaca Bakery near Purity Dairy has a fine cheese range.

Alan -

Why are the corners round, David. I know there is a wit afoot but I am not getting it.
