Two years ago I got my new wagon, aka Laura Carr...drink some rum and say "little red car"...see? Yes, a 2003 Ford Focus Wagon. 0% interest deal and lots of dealing got me a very good rate. All in for $315.00 per month. 47,000 km. It has a year to go on warranty, three on payment. It has done everything I need but expand to match the inordinate height of an offspring. No headrests in the back. Not safe as can be. My slacker options appear to be:
- keep it and run it into the ground and work on the ergonomics of the back seat.
- Get a lower milage 2003 Ford Taurus wagon for maybe ten or twenty or forty bucks more a month and get more space and extend the total warranty a year.
- Get a new 2006 Ford Focus wagon for $380 all in a month, three year all in warranty.
- Get a new 2005 Ford Taurus wagon for about $460 to $500 a month all in, three year all in warranty.
Thoughts? I am not married to Fords. I am actually more of a VW guy but I have heard that this is a bad decade for VWs. And I am slack enough a shopper to stick with a dealership that has treated us very well even for a little less in a car. Why dip into the great dark pool of uncertainty when it comes to your automotive service department?
So boring, boring, boring and totally Dad but what can you do? Come to think of it, is this the dullest thing I have ever posted for your input?

Maybe time to think about a more energy efficient car (looking at the current gas prices?)

Ford Focus has 42 miles to the gallon rating highway. We spend 20 bucks a week even at 97 cents a litre and drive it daily. That is pretty good.

i thought about this. youre always off on a jaunt. you have two small kids. buy the bigger wagon brand new and just pay the money. it's worth it. it's about safety and reliability right now, and being comfortable. fuck economics. this is one where you should take the hit.

note that i didn't my slightly used one. next one i got was new.

I appreciate that but the Ford Focus is actually the safer car as well as being cheaper...at least according to the information I have seen. Where would it start? Volvos?

i got nothing against the focus if thats where youre going. loved my escort. i just thought you wanted bigger is all. and c'mon - there's no way the focus is safer than the taurus. you got the right guy doing right rationalization on the right day for you if thats why youre going for the focus. i got the one kid. why do you think i went bigger? al, use your noggin. i did the research and the test drives and my insurance rates went down with the taurus because it's safer. plus it holds its value because - wait for it - (sotto voice) they make the ecomony models out of tin; that's why they're cheaper. if youre gonna buy a focus - okay - but do it because of clear thought out reasons not something you'd like to believe. in a fight the taurus beats the crap out of the focus everyday - parts all over the schoolyard.
now, it's not worth talking baout fords anymore. some chevy guy is gonna make fun of us fer sure and the high irony will be it's not like either one of us is impressed by anyone's fucking car.

But why can I get a 2003 Taurus for the same as a 2003 Focus but a 2006 Taurus costs 25% more a month? Taurus loses more value. Taurus gets @32 highway, Focus @42 (imp. gal.). And the emissions and safety just are better.
But, yes, we deserve a good butt kick. I really want a VW camper van. I saw a stretch Hummer somewhere in New England. I want a truck and a dog as long as someone takes care of the dog. Dogs stink. I want a mandolin and a winning lotto ticket. I really do not want a Ford. You are a bigger goof, though, as you are on your third Ford. I am on my first.

awwww. it's just a car. i'm not counting. i got a good deal on this one. ford smord. i'm not here to talk about cars.
look boyo, after five years you can't trade a neon, an escort, a focus (any of the economy cars) for a bill root card. they're disposable. they're meant to be. that's why they wrote off my escort when i banged it up even though i could've fixed it myself with wire and some gum. i mean it kept me safe and all and i'm not complaining but lets be clear we're not talking about cars here; we're talking about you saying a dopey thing; there's no way a little tin car is safer or holds it value better than a big steel car. you wanna buy a little car - do so. i don't care. i think the little car you're talking baout is a fine little car. but don't be mr. rationalization. you do that, you know? i'm calling you on it this time.
portland - August 18, 2005 11:47 PM
and i'd like to have a banjo and dogs do stink, yeah.
portland - August 18, 2005 11:47 PM
and by far youre the bigger goof.
portland - August 18, 2005 11:50 PM
and it gets 42 because it's made of tin. did i say anything about gas mileage? i think all i mentioned was the comfort and safety of the jr. members of your family.
portland - August 19, 2005 12:00 AM
goof.
Alan - August 19, 2005 7:36 AM
Yes, you goof - but the gas thing eats at you. I can see that. It is the verticle dimension that is the need. Back head rest. Did you know that there is only a 3 cu ft difference, too, 38 to 35.
portland - August 22, 2005 11:19 AM
okay, you're right, the focus is not only safer but superior in every way. that's why they charge less. god bless the good people at ford. I know this has gone on too long by the way but i want to see if you can lay off the last word. betcha can't.
Alan - August 22, 2005 11:40 AM
If you can't why shouldn't I?
...but I think we need to abstract ourselves and merely repeat "oh, yea?", "yea!", "you and what army", etc. You pick the next topic.
