Who knew that the beaches of New England were 7 hours away from Lake Ontario? Who knew that once you have 512 MB on your camera you get 342 photos to look through when you get home? Who knew that I would have first-and-first-cousins-once-removed-in-law-to-my-second-cousin with whom I might go to see the Bruins play if the NHL ever gets going again? Who knew?

Imagine my excitement when I realized that same fact about Portland being only 8 hours from Rochester! It's like a bizarre reverse-tardis in terms of time. What looks like it should take hours, nay, days on map takes only a work day of driving.

And you get to say "clams and chowder" over and over throughout that work day's drive. You could likely cut a little time off, too, by heading to the Connecticut shore from the Mass turnpike. I can vouch for Bill's Seafood.

Bill's is 674 km from Kingston according to Google Maps. Boston is 692 km from here. That is 12 minutes of seafood eating they cannot take away from you by heading to Bill's forgetting the traffic problems it does not share with Boston. But New York is only 667 km and that does not take into consideration the salinity of the Hudson and the most northerly seafood shack next to said salinity. Providence Rhode Island may be the best bet at 654 km away. <p>There are shacks down river from Quebec City (534 km away) but the real local shrimp fishery of the Gaspe only starts well east of it, which would place it beyond Bill's if one is to have seafood by salt water. Rimouski is, for example, 825 km away and you have to get through Montreal en route.
