First I get the Du-rang-o. Then the Prime Minister annouces he will address the nation tomorrow:
Prime Minister Paul Martin will appeal directly to Canadian voters Thursday evening, in an attempt to quell their fears about the sponsorship scandal and Liberal corruption. He will appear in a live, televised evening address Thursday at 7:45 p.m. EDT, a move that is seen as extraordinary. "He'll address the sponsorship issue and the current parliamentary context," Amy Butcher, a spokeswoman for the Prime Minister's Office, told globeandmail.com. She indicated the gravity of the address. "He'll speak directly to what he thinks to address the current political deadlock in the House of Commons," Ms. Butcher said. He'll make the address from his office in front of a television camera, speaking to Canadians for five to six minutes in both French and English, Ms. Butcher said. But she said the Prime Minister is not making a move toward calling an election. "He will not prorogue the House, nor dissolve Parliament."
"HEEELLLP!!!" |
So what will he say? "Like me" because he opened up this mess? Sure - but we already know that line. "Dislike them" because, however bad the Grits are, you can't name five Tories you would want in cabinet? Sure - I buy that completely. Can you imagine Stockwell Day actually getting the Foreign Affairs ministry rather than being just its opposition critic? He believes the Flintstones is a documentary about 4,000 years ago. So what will Martin say? Will anyone turn away from Survivor or whatever else is on to find out?

No. No they wont. Lowest ranked nationally telivised address by a national leader ever. That's my prediction. All he's doing is lowering the standard of suspense for the next time we go to war, or for the next referendum, whichever comes first. Given the state of the nation and the nation's military, probably the latter.

Martin and his posse are under the sadly mistaken impression that a crisis in their government is a national crisis. Newsflash for David Herle: No one cares!!! Instead of being everything to everybody, PM PM has been nothing to all. The only thing people hear about the Liberal government is that sponsorship scandal thing where a bunch of Liberals made their friends rich and kept the likes of Alfonso Gagliano and Warren Kinsella in the halls of power. And nobody likes those guys. Not surprisingly, the poll numbers are dropping. No one really appreciates that PM PM is trying to distance himself from the adscam. Perception being reality in politics, people see the corruption and want to punish some one. The closest person to punish is PM PM's government. He has not done enough to be likable or charismatic enough not punish for the Chretien regime's crimes. Its too bad, he certainly had a lot of promise and a lot of accomplishments, but once he became PM, he did not capitalize on his opportunity and now the forces of malevolence are too great for him to overcome.

I suggest that this proposed address has all the hallmarks of a desperate, pitiful "hostage video".

Remember how he fought so hard to get to PM only to find out he was a dud? Maybe he thought all along that Jean and the crew were a bit twisted but was kept out of the loop and, being a real boy scout thought he would get in and put it all right only to find he is a dud. Naaaaaah. He's just a dud.
