It
was one of those "I could not believe it" moments. I have seen fans reach out
and grab a ball before it fell into a players glove, I have seen fans brawl with
players in an NHL penalty box. But last night as I watched the Sox beat the
Yankees 8-5 this guy reached
out into the field and slugged Yankees outfielder Gary Sheffield.
"I just felt something hit me in the mouth," Sheffield said. "It felt like a hand hit me in the mouth, but I have to look at the tape. "I don't know if it punched me or not, but it felt like it. I thought my lip was busted. I continued with the play, then I thought about it and didn't react. It could have been worse if I didn't hold my composure. I almost snapped. I thought about the consequences."Sheffied's restraint and the incredible leaping skills of Fenway security guy saved the day. I am not one to rant about the fans being out of control but it is amazing to me that this guy has not been arrested and charged for assault. IF a stranger slugs me in the face for his own entertainment, I call the cops. Unfortunately, it was on the key play which took the Sox from 5-5 to 8-5 and, though it did not interfere with the outcome of the play, it took away from the grand moment of kicking the Yanks.
Thanks for nothing, jerk.
