From the New York Times, 2 October 2004, B18.
While I was catching up on my newspapers, I noticed this excellent map from the Weather Report section of the New York Times yesterday. Notice a couple of things. Those little brown patches to the south of Kingston on the US side on Lake Ontario show an average annual first frost of 30 October. The little brown patch below the other is Nine Mile Point, whose nuclear reactor tower or at least the steam can be seen from my roof. The other patch is nearer, around Sacket's Harbour, about 30 minutes south by motor boat. Another thing to note is how, if you drive east from Sacket's Harbor, eleven miles to Watertown and then further into Adriondack Park heading towards Saranac Lake the annual first frost date is before 10 September, seven weeks earlier.
This is the thing that makes me quite tempted to find a patch to garden around here, maybe on balmy Wolfe Island, given how long the season is in this tropical micro-climate.
