I am not really anti-royalist so much as aroyal.
I wish they would just go away. Pack up their vestigal constitutional implications and funny hand waves and go to the cottage...or Finland...but just admit that they are irrelevant.
Why this outburst of 1640's furvor? Harry. Second in line. Pulls a mini-Chretien, as illustrated, refuses to apologize like a normal person would...oh, and cheats at school, gets away with that, and gets money either out of the public funds or out of the income from sadly yet to be expropriated royal properties. An undergrad pal went to high school for a year with a prince of the previous generation. Told us that the guy was so dim-witted that he thought people put stamps in the UK with his mother's profile out of love and devotion. Good Lord.
Go. And leave the silverware and towels.

I am glad to report that 100% of my international comment makers responding by telephone entirely agree with me.

They're merely tourist props.

Tourism is about a 165 Billion dollar business in the UK. The Royal Family cost the British taxpayer about 60 million dollars last year. You do the math.
SayNay? - October 23, 2004 9:16 PM
Sorry, that should have read "80" million
SayNay? - October 23, 2004 9:25 PM
UK ave. about 22-24 million visitors each year who spend about 30 billion dollars.

The tourism industry to the UK without these dim-wits and their pension for life? Exactly the same - whatever your figures mean, 30 billion or 165 billion.

Ah the old 'Royals=tourism' myth. Anybody would think they greet overseas tourists personally and hang about all summer so they can be snapped with them. In fact they bugger off to Balmoral and nobody can get within a hundred miles of the cosseted pricks.
And as for them being mere 'tourist props' - don't you kid yourself. They are a very powerful group who just appear cute and cuddly. Just you try getting rid of them - that's when you find out just what they're capable of.

I thought maybe one of you would point out that France ave. about 77 million visitors a year - and look what they did to their Royal Family.
M.Harry dit bonjour a Mme. Guillotine?

God save the Queen!

... but what have they done for tourism in Canada? Let's get rid of them here in the colonies first and let the UK do its own economic impact studies.
