This word appears twice in common parlance, in The Lords Prayer and the name of today. At least in North America, if you referred to tomorrow as All Hallows you might be looked at as a bit of a weirdo.
1. make holy, consecrate. 2. honour as holy.So tomorrow, we are supposed to be aware of holiness. Tonight, that is juxaposed. The Even of All Hallows when things are made upside-down so that when they are righted the difference is clear. Beside the quesiton of how a government could impose on a folk tradition (what next - laws about birthdays?), I was thinking this year how the communities which would move Hallowe'en off Sunday after lobbying by churches are acting in an un-Christian manner. This time is an echo of Easter, when God as man died, goes to hell and pops back unscathed. These stories are alway bad stuff first, then the good stuff.
Without the bad stuff, there is no tension, not drama and ultimately no point. If we forget about death and confusion, are we really clear on life and order?
