I have written about the great portrait collection at work before. I have a hard time keeping my eyes off this particular painting when I am in a meeting in a certain room and especially the detail over the shoulder of the Mayor for 1898, Charles Livingston:

Hmmm. Isn't that ship just on fire?

That would be weird.

Nice, thanks. Great zoom.

Do you think the ship is on fire, too, Mike? Is it a tiny Turner-esque moment?

Funny, the more you look at that ship, the more it does look like it's on fire. Perhaps it is Turner-esque, symbolizing the nadir of the Great Lakes steamer? ... no, the timing isn't right for that.

Perhaps he's commemorating the sinking of a particular steamer (?).

Rumour has it that the lucky enlisted types, who did not live at Fort Henry, often occupied these Martello Towers, similar to todays Princess Towers on Princess Street. On such a clear and sunny day it is likely that the windows and doors would have been open to air out the stench of two or three families. Or maybe everyone inside wanted a better look at the burning ship.
