You know you are a big jerk when you read a story in The Globe and Mail about the events of rebellion and peace keeping in the Ivory Coast, illustrated by a second story photo of people on the street, and find yourself thinking "sweet soccer jerseys". The red and white one I think is Monaco from the French first division. I am not sure about the one on the right - looks kind of like Manchester City.
I do have a problem.

It must be the irony that caught your eye.

But also the normalcy. Most people just want peace, a job, a beer and the right to see or play a game. Things get twisted as with Bosnia, Rwanda, Al Queda when that simple truth is ignored. The best thing about democracy is its militant protection of the freedom just to be happy. <p>Thanks for commenting, by the way.

Yes, normalcy is exactly it. What I find so particularly odious about most totalitarian regimes is that they take the option of living a "normal life" away from their people.

"The militant protection of the freedom just to be happy" sounds about right to me.

When I worked in Holland I learned that the young Dutch would still go up to Germans and say "Give me back my bicycle" as that is one of the first things the Nazis took away. Filled the canals with them apparently.

Arthur once witnessed people throwing a bike in a canal (with a girl encouraging her boy-friend), so let me assure you, it's definitely not a "German" trait.
Keep that in mind when visiting Amsterdam next time. :-)

I know - there was a lot of open anti-German sentiment among my co-workers in the Aalsmeer flower auctions in 1986. They had me trained to spot a German from the style of hair cut and then ask them, in Dutch, if I could enquire as to their favorite author.
