I walked past this chimney the other day behind the Grand Theatre on Brock. It is odd because it is brick and fairly ornate but attached to a building which is neither. The little metal roof thingies to the side appear entirely non-functional.
I have had the occassion to look at a title search nearby to this property and what is now the Chown parking lot across from Hotel Dieu Hospital was once the site of the Cooke's Presbyterian Church from about 1860 to about 1960. I wonder if this is a vestige of that?
The eight sided top to the smokestack is pretty snazzy. Someone put more than the average attention to its design.
10 Days Later: I went back and got a view of the entire alley.

Lo and behold! Last week, I was speaking to a senior lawyer in the area and this was the site of the old Salvation Army. My guess was correct.
