Beckham inadvertantly joins the race for the X-prize
Tough break Engerland. I got to listen to the BBC Live Five audio through the latter end of the afternoon and then zip home to catch the Lampard goal that got you into the penalties. And then there was this a kick like I would have taken in high school. For me the rest is the breaks of a game and getting to penalties is testimony enough. But to miss by twenty feet high and ten feet wide?
Coached the under fives an hour later and the game went on.

I got to watch most of it (missed first 15 min). That was an exciting one, Portugal really took it to them. Amazing to see Ricardo go and net the winner.

That last little touch was almost as good as Owen Nowlan pointing to the corner against Hasek before he scored on him in that corner. I want a Dutch-Portuguese final. My Canada includes Portugal.

Great quote on the outcome and the whims of the gods:<blockquote class="smalltext">"The English complain about their history of painful failure in international football. As befits our oldest allies, the locals here have as many bitter-sweet memories and no grainy, past triumph to dwell upon, either. Yet last night they moved a giant step closer to giving themselves something monumental to cherish on the biggest of stages as they became the latest team to take advantage of England's penalty phobia" - John Dillon, Daily Express.</blockquote>From the Guardian's coverage. Best headline: "What an Urs hole" from the Daily Star. Urs Meier was the ref.

With Greece winning, I wouldn't mind seeing a 'third-Europe' final. That is, a final without the usual top countries.
