So I was on the phone for 40 minutes with very helpful sympatico tech guys walking me through the problem with my computer not reaching their computer. It ended when they said they see my modem and it appears to be working well and my computer says everything is working well so I have to get a new ethernet cable as that seems to be the problem point. Or we are down the path of analysis that has the ethernet as the later stage equivalent of "try rebooting".
Here's the thing. I don't really miss it at home. I went to be a little earlier and got up a little later. Tickled my kids a few times more. Maybe I will dump the highspeed, use the old 56 K modem inside and save 25 bucks a month in internet costs.
Here is the question - do I need highspeed after all?

Got home tonight and went to call to re-establish dial-up and cancel highspeed rather than go through more of the tech support and lo and behold, the high speed had fixed itself. I expect there was an unadmitted background problem with the system.
