A while ago I was wondering about adding sound to this site. Not necessarily music but some audio. I received some interesting support and advice.
It is hard to find a cheap digital sound recorder but I think I have landed on an inexpensive alternative, the Sony TCM-150 portable cassette recorder. I am not so much loyal to Sony as comfortable with it. I have a Sony stereo amp, a ICF-2010 shortwave radio and recently we got a DSC-P32 digital camera. Am I really that loyal? Had this week's service issue about my 64 Mb Memory Stick not been resolved as quickly as it was in the end, I may have done a Ruk over the rotten telephone client service they were offering. I now hold my tongue as they were rescued by a helpful and responsive email.
So, I will have to figure out where to get one, what it can do without a microphone and whether a further investmet in one is required. I walked over to get something to eat this lunch and heard the scrunching sound of shoes on cold snow for the first time this winter. That's what I want to record and post for you, especially that guy in Belize - the sound of snow.

Have you considered a MiniDisc recorder? They're freaking small, relatively inexpensive, and very useful. Granted they might not be as cheap as tape-based recorders, but to me, the extra cost is certainly worth getting away from tape!
I like the idea of recording the crunch of snow...it's approaching -30 here and I just might give recording it a try myself...though I'll wait for tomorrow to even think about it.

Oooh, following your links, I see someone did mention MiniDiscs. My bad...

No prob, Rick. Did you see the movie on snow sound I made? I am amazed at the audio quality on the Sony camera and I have yet to figure out if I can record just audio with it. If not, I think I will go with the 50 buck Sony unit if only because its only 50 bucks and, like my bike, if I never really use it, I won't be bothered at that price.

Oh, that movie is *excellent!* It's pretty much what I was looking to capture. The only other thing I'd like to to capture a car approaching a stop sign on snow with the temperature at least -20 if not colder. If there's any snow on the road at that temperature, I can't imagine anyone could have a chance at being hit by a car because one can hear them coming from so far away!
Like you said, for $50 you really can't go wrong if it comes down to it...

I've seen the kids destroy toys in under an hour that cost more...
