Maybe I'm ignorant, but what is the real use of copper on the roof, besides it being a great (electical) conductor?

I dunno. It is maleable. It turns a fancy green over time. It is historically accurate. The two domes themselves are covered with a copper shingle I think as opposed to the newer sheeting at the base.
