Excellent observations from the The New York Times on the steroid scandle:
And although Commissioner Bud Selig has said this year that he wants a stringent steroids-testing program, he has ignored past drug problems. In 1998, when Mark McGwire was on his way to breaking the season home run record, he was found to be using a steroidlike supplement, androstenedione. Not much was known about the supplement at the time, but there were questions about it.There must be more integrity to the question than drugs are bad unless they are productive. The swift decaying of the Yankees Jason Giambi's insides alone should be the shame of the nation. It would be interesting to know Rush Limbaugh's take on it...but that would mean listening to his cheery style. But the race between McGwire and Sammy Sosa revived interest in baseball that faded with the 1994-95 strike, and Selig did not want to undermine that recovery. Baseball took its time in investigating andro, which the government has since banned. Then there are the fans. "There are many fans disturbed," [Sen. John] McCain said over the weekend. So many were disturbed this year that Major League Baseball set an attendance record.
