I was surprised but I guess should not have been by the part of Bush's speech described in this morning's New York Times in this way:
Drawing later on a line he often slips into his campaign speeches, he reminded a global audience that "freedom is the Almighty's gift to every man and woman in this world. And as the greatest power on the face of the Earth, we have an obligation to help the spread of freedom."This is one step from saying that the United States has an obligation to do God's will. Being Christian, I find this just odd - my faith telling me that God really does not need an army to do his will. But what does the atheist or Hindu or Buddhist feel when she or he hears this?
There are many lesser reasons to attribute to the use of state force as the US has done - national security, international human rights, civic obligation even. Does it worry when the basis for the North Korean food program is implicitly but singularly ascribed to the Gospels?
