An interesting discussion over at Boing Boing on the legality of webcasting baseball games you are attending. Last week when I was recording short passages of the Sarah Harmer concert, I did wonder what was the legality but as I was technologically restricted to 20 second clips at most, I am pretty comfortable with the section 29 provisions of our Copyright Act that what I was doing was reviewing it.
But what will happen in five years when we all have lapel stick pin cameras recording and webcasting everything all the time. I think the difference and the saving grace for artists will remain quality as opposed to exclusivity. I want to have commentary from the booth, have expensively produced clear clean sound, I want booklets with liner notes, I want the experience of being in the auditorium to see the penalty shot or the accoustic solo. That is what I will be paying for.
