CHARLOTTETOWN — Phillip Brown has found himself in more hot water. The opposition is calling for the tourism minister's resignation after he tabled a letter the Liberals are calling racist. The letter is from a Brown supporter in Ontario. It was a reaction to news reports about the minister using his government car to get to a second job cleaning post offices in western P.E.I.
FROM APR. 14, 2004: Brown defends use of government car
On Thursday afternoon Brown read part of the letter to members of the legislature. He quoted the paragraph that called his Liberal critics "nose picking welfare cruds who deserve to be loaded on a plane and sent to Moscow to live out their socialist fantasies." Brown then looked across the house and said "that's the kind credibility that this group over here is bringing to our province." The letter states Canada was built on the shoulders of the Irish and Scottish immigrants like minister Brown. It then continues, "now that the country is built, those who wear the Liberal boots want to crush those shoulders to the ground."
That part of the letter didn't sit well with opposition leader Robert Ghiz. His father Joe was Canada's first Lebanese premier, and a former leader of the P.E.I. Liberal party. "By choosing to table this document the minister offered implied support for its contents which are racist, intolerant and extremely offensive," Ghiz said.

After the session Brown refused to talk about the letter. He said he didn't write it and only tabled it. Premier Pat Binns also declined to discuss the contents of the letter.
