I don't really care for writing about politics much, especially conservative politics. The idea that an individual could actually express an undertanding of what happened or is happening in Iraq, whether Bush/Clinton/Bush/Regan is/was a great leader or a stunned moron, whether Paul Martin's rise is an abomination to democracy are things I could yap about but I would never know if I am in anyway near an understanding of what is/was. I am fairly certain that Jimmy Carter is the only ethical and contextually intellegent, if unsupported, US president in my lifetime and that the Mulroney era's 300 billion addition to the national debt - not to mention the "spectacular farce" of John Buchanan and other eastern money-lobbing Tories - is a injury to the nation that should never be forgotten. The rest is shades of grey.
That all being said, I will never vote for them what ever name the Conservative Reform Alliance Party will go by...but I am glad that it looks like they may get their act together. I tire of the annointing of the bland and national elections which mean nothing.

Ya gotta wonder, don't you, what difference the merge will make? Personally, I wish we could vote for Wesley Clark. There, I said it out loud.

I wish I could vote for Romeo Delaire but I am sure that would end up in a Jimmy Carter situation - fantastically good guy weighed down by the less good.

The difference it will make? In the last federal election the Liberals had 40.8% of the popular vote, the Tories and allaince combined had 37.7%. I think enough people are sick of the Liberals, and there will be enough backlash over the gun registry, same-sex marriages, govt scandals, etc that a 'united right' could actually give the Liberals a run for their money. If anything it will make for a real election instead of a coronation. A Liberal win isn't necessarily a guarantee anymore.

Truthfully Ben, I think you're correct. Coronation-style elections do not serve the public interest. I just wonder if enough time has passed since the Mulroney government. I think there are a lot of Alliance voters who won't support a merged party with quite the same fervour.
