Via Mike, Stuart McLean has a blog via his publisher. As with Nils, I wonder how the dynamic of the free blog and the professional "ain't life funny" kind of commentator will work out. Will you sometimes pay when often get it for free?

I haven't been to McLean's blog yet, but as a "pro" - that is, one who makes their living with witty and insightful prose, I can tell you that it's a matter of constant balance. As free-flowing as "bloggage" can be, I am ever conscious of what I have that might be parlayed into something that can be published. My blog is good stuff (at least I think so) but it's not my "best" stuff.
There's also an inherent value to blogging, in that it builds exposure, and, hopefully, a fan base, who will then purchase the books, etc. that you write.
Lileks is a great example, I think, of how it works well.

Thanks for that. I just did a quick check over at your place - where do you publish your column? [I think I am right in recalling it is a paper column?]

Actually, the first printed column just made its appearance this week under the Generation Xhausted banner, in the Shoreline Week newspaper. My essays have appeared in many magazines over the last three years though, and in February, there will be a collection of them published.

Was half surprised to see Stuart asking readers for Dave and Morley ideas.
"If I don't get 2000 words written today I am in trouble. And they have to be good words. Dave is going to be Santa Claus at the community Xmas party. If anyone has any ideas this is the time to send them to me. I have been fooling around. I have to have to get serious."
Hmmm, Dave is surfing the web one day when he happens to find Morley's blog. Dave didn't know Morley had a blog. Dave didn't know that there was a word 'blog' ....
