That's about all the Nederlands I can recall. Probably spelled all wrong. No...I can also recall weerserwachting: TV weather report. Don't forget all the w's are v's and you have to to hork when you hit the "ch".
It was '86. It was spring and I worked in the burbs of Amsterdam. Just me, my bike and all the cheese I could eat. Why do I share? Because if it weren't for the classy millions who make democracy work on a little more than a bog, we wouldn't have such a nice clock.

I think you and Nigel may be confusing the Dutch with the Belgians of whom Monty Python said that they needed no nicknames as they call themselves Flems.

The Dutch word for prostitute is "hoer", cognate to the English "whore" or, even better, the Maritime "hoor". This is not taught in the schools. Living in the New World, where three of the four major languages are Latin descendants, we live under the rod of the French teacher and lack the sense that our language is part of a larger Germanic family. Put Dutch in the curriculum, and Norwegian.

Bro. I thought the Maritime pronuncation was "hooo-AH" - maybe only in "Lun-a-buuuurg".

I agree, and would also include Japanese alphabet at a young age, maybe sixth grade. Both for the recognition that there is another alphabet, and because of the drawing skills needed to form the elements.

Reminds me of the visit we had from Swedish relatives on my wife's side. All the hugging and uncomfortable smiles were washed away by one word "ale?" which received the reply "ol? ja!"

I never slept there. I'm trying to remember how the word was spelled in M*A*S*H Goes to Maine. Considering that H and R can be pretty vowel-like consonants, "whore" could be one of those rare English words that's really just a sigh or exhilation, like half of French. Normally English is pretty hard on the consonant side, especially the swear words.
