Maybe it's me, but I've never associated the NDP with something Europeans would call 'socialist'. Add to that, the word itself leaves behind a bad taste in Northern America: if I tell people that socialists (in Europe) actually stand for liberal laws and active government involvement in economic affairs they get more confused.

I would suggest that that is because you have come to Canada after the Mulroney revolution and the demise of real left politics. In the good old days when the Tories pushed for state control of wages and prices, the arse was truly out of 'er. Don't expect to see those days again, but a lucid argument for liberal unlibertarianism wouldn't be a surprise.
