Fellow glider, Mike in Halifax, has paid homage to our hero here at HQ, Brent. Mike kindly points to my tracking of his playlist on CBC Ottawa's All in a Day (to your right, my left) and goes on to praise Brent's days on the overnight show Brave New Waves. I also learned a lot about music from him and remember, one late night, first hearing Billy Bragg on BNW in '86 or so.
I have been impressed by the Bambury summer presence on CBC and his ability to avoid the likes of the Rex's and Ralph's wearing oversaturation. When the CBC likes someone, they lamprey latch onto him or her and create show after show around them - good with Brent, a bit tired now with old Jono I-should-stick-to-Trailer-Park-Boys Torrence. I hear Brent weekly on Go and Grooveshinny on top of All in a Day. He also hosted the late July SARS concert from Toronto for CBC radio, putting AC/DC and the Stones performances in the proper perspective, and, last Thurday, was the voice in the dark from CBC Ottawa during the first hours of the blackout on the battery powered transistor from 4 pm to 10 pm. His interview with a young Welsh couple stuck at the Ottawa airport with five bucks and a shut Tim's was personal, humane and funny. [People showed up with BBQ remains for them within minutes.]
There is also something in his laugh that is between a ten year old kid just having fun and your pal in undergrad trying to set you up for public embarrassment after getting you too pounded on ales. Some menace is within possibility.
